You know for a minute at least some of those poniies thought they just murdered their good friend Twilight. That’s a black scorch mark. It doesn’t speak of something nice normally and I think you can also see what I mean in their faces.
So what you’re to draw is what happened in that window between Twilight’s ‘death’ and return. Or you could go more ‘what if that actually happened’ if you would like. Whichever inspires you darlings~

So... I thought, what if they did the askh-ente rite (summon death, and ask things if needed) from Terry pratchett's Discworld?
This was happened in Colour of Magic, when the wizards summoned Death, and he was at a masquerade party. At the end of the discussion:
Galder: I said I hope it is a good party. AT THE MOMENT IT IS. I THINK IT MIGHT GO DOWNHILL VERY QUICKLY AT MIDNIGHT. Galder: Why? THAT'S WHEN THEY THINK I'LL BE TAKING MY MASK OFF.
This has probably already been mentioned, but I can't tell because I am in "more like this" mode right now: There is a fanfic where Pinkie is descended from Binky (after he retired0, and ends up occasionally doing his job... then later she accidentally becomes DEATH.
Interesting that even in the Discverse, Death as we encounter him is only the Death of the Discworld (and even then he allows the Death of Rats a separate existence).
Presumably, the Death of Equestria's planet would be a separate entity, at least inasmuch as all planet-level Deaths are ultimately part of Azrael. He or she would most likely utilize their shapeshifting ability more often, though, given the world's multiple sapient species.
(Interesting point - Discworld thaumo-optical physics could explain rainbooms. If it wasn't for a globe appearing in The Secret of My Excess, Equestria being on a disc would explain some of its local astronomical effects, too.)
